• Originally proposed and implemented for VM Operating System (IBM)
• A virtual machine provides an interface identical to the underlying bare hardware
• Each user is given its own virtual machine
• The operating system creates the illusion of multiple processes, each executing on its sown processor with its own (virtual) memory
